Conference March 2008
In March 2007 No One is Illegal organised a conference in Liverpool. This as well attended by over 100 trades unionists.
The Finsbury Branch of the RMT has called for a further conference to take place in London March 29 2008. At a meeting to iscuss this call migrant organisations made representations that this should be trade union and community conference, to ensure that migrant and refugee communities had a central role.
We aim for a conference that is undogmatic and which allows for open debate.
Themes identified are:
* how trade unions can initiate a campaign of recruitment and organisation
of migrants and refugees
* Fighting back against the implementation of new legislation 'to prevent
illegal working in the UK'
* Stopping deportations and detention of members
* Defiance not Compliance – How can unions support and encourage their
members in refusing to implement immigration controls in their services -
social work, education, pilots and air cabin crew, ticket inspectors...
* Immigration, racism and fascism – opposing racist propaganda, the myths
from the Government, the media and the fascists.
GET INVOLVED IN THE FIGHT BACK NOW!
Building a successful conference of this kind requires a lot of work. The
more people the share the work the better. And if there are people from a wide
range of trade unions and communities involved in building the conference the
more likely that we will shall reach a broad spread of organisations.
But it is not just about building the conference. The attacks on migrants
are already happening. The need to defend people and fight back cannot wait
until the end of March 2008. So whilst building the conference we want to
develop a network of people who can respond or develop a response to these attacks.
This is especially pertinent now that the Border & Immigration Agency and the
employers will be starting to implement “the new powers to prevent illegal
migrant working in the UK, contained in the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality
Act 2006.
